Overview of Cheesman Park
Located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Denver, Cheesman Park spans over 80 acres and is bordered by East 8th Avenue, Franklin Street, East 13th Avenue, and High Street. The park is known for its expansive lawns, lush trees, vibrant flower beds, and the iconic Cheesman Memorial Pavilion. Its central location and scenic views make it a favorite among locals and visitors alike it's also why I love to recommend it as a great spot for photoshoots.
Best Times for a Photoshoot
Golden Hour
The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset, known as the golden hour, provides the most flattering natural light no matter where you go. The park’s open spaces and tree lines beautifully capture the warm, soft glow, creating a magical backdrop for any photoshoot.
Early Morning
If you prefer fewer crowds and a serene atmosphere, early morning is ideal. The park is tranquil, and the soft morning light enhances the natural beauty of the landscape.
Evening
Evening photoshoots can be equally stunning, with the setting sun casting long shadows and adding a golden hue to the surroundings. During the evening the pavilion will be lit up by the setting sun giving it warmer colors and a magical feel.
Iconic Spots within Cheesman Park
Cheesman Memorial Pavilion
This neoclassical structure, made of white marble, is the centerpiece of the park and will always be the first place we visit during our photoshoot. The columns and open-air design offer a timeless and elegant backdrop, perfect for portraits and group photos. There are usually people within the pavilion so be prepared however, it will not affect how your photos turn out as I can edit people out of the background.
Flower Gardens
During spring and summer, the park’s flower beds are in full bloom, offering vibrant and colorful settings.
Tree-lined Paths
The park boasts several tree-lined paths that create natural frames and add depth to your photos. These paths are particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves change color.
Open Lawns
The expansive lawns provide a versatile space for various types of shoots.
Cheesman Park’s Perimeter
The park’s outer paths offer views of Denver’s skyline and the distant Rocky Mountains, blending urban and natural elements.
I usually stick to the pavilion and flower gardens during our photoshoot but feel free to let me know if you'd like to travel around the park during out shoot!
Seasonal Highlights
Spring
In Denver and at the park spring doesn't really get going until the end of April. Throughout May, we'll see cherry blossoms and tulips bringing bursts of color to the park.
Summer
Summer is the best time for a photo shoot at Cheesman Park, in my opinion. It's the time when the park is lush and full of life. Throughout the entire summer, there will be different types of flowers always in bloom.
Fall
Cheesman Park is breathtaking in the fall. The changing leaves create a warm and rich palette of reds, oranges, and yellows. It’s a prime time for capturing the essence of autumn.
Winter
Although less popular, winter shoots can be stunning, especially after a fresh snowfall. The bare trees and white landscape create a serene and minimalist setting. If you're looking for warmer photos, having your photoshoot during golden hour in the evening can help.
Additional Tips for a Successful Photoshoot
Permits
Check if you need a permit for your photoshoot. For most of my photoshoots, a permit usually isn't needed but if you plan on bringing more than 5 people with you for photos and we plan to be out after dark, a permit might be required. Visit the Denver Parks and Recreation website for details.
Weather
Colorado’s weather can be unpredictable. I always check the forecast the days leading up to our photoshoot and the morning of. Generally, Denver has afternoon storms but usually clears up by sunset. If we need to reschedule due to weather, I am always happy to as long as my schedule allows.
Timing
Depending on the day, parking can be very easy to find or a bit harder. You'll find street parking all around the park. Give yourself ample time to walk into the park. If you or someone you're with can't walk far distances, I recommend having someone drop them off close to the pavilion and then find parking.
Equipment
Generally, I only bring my basic photography gear and don't bring any additional lighting sources or props. The park provides beautiful natural lighting as is. If you would like to bring props, you're absolutely welcome to!
Comfort
I always recommend bringing water to your session as especially in the summertime it can get hot. If you plan on wearing high heels or any shoes that can become uncomfortable with long walks, I recommend bringing a change just in case. If at any time during our photo shoot you need a break, please don't hesitate to let me know. :) Your comfort is my priority.
Conclusion
Cheesman Park is one of my favorite photo spots and is very versatile. From the iconic Cheesman Memorial Pavilion to the vibrant flower gardens and expansive lawns, every corner of the park can serve as a beautiful backdrop.
